Obituary for Miriam Haber

Miriam Haber, my mother Miriam Haber - September 9, 1924 – August 29, 2024
Almost reaching 99 years of age, Miriam Haber, finally resting in peace after bravely battling multiple illnesses.
Miriam Haber, was a gentle and kind woman. She married her Harold in March 1948 after a courtship via the US commissary, where she volunteered and Harold received supplies as a navy vet. They were happily married for 72 years until he passed in April 2020. Miriam was one of 4 sisters born to Samuel & Anna Sheletsky. who immigrated to the US from Russia and Austria. They lived in tenements throughout Brooklyn, surviving on Sam’s salary as a union tailor. Miriam was an honor student at Eastern District High School in Brooklyn, excelling in typing and steno, where she helmed her lifelong skills as a bookkeeper – she was proud that her books balanced to the penny in every job! She was an avid lover of romantic Hollywood movies and musicals. Miriam spent a lifetime helping others, especially her family, visiting her parents and sisters every Sunday, huddling in Sam and Anna’s small kitchen filled with lots of love and eastern European aromas wafting in. Miriam was an excellent cook and the best soup maker in the family.
Miriam and Harold raised 2 daughters, Ellen & Robin, first in the Ravenswood public housing projects in Astoria and then in Woodside. A lifelong Democrat and union supporter, Miriam worked the polls and elections, supported Harold and his work in the Jewish War Veterans. She worked all her life in the private sector until retirement.
Miriam is survived by her daughter Robin Potter; grandchildren Aimee & Jackson Potter and their partners Richard Cornell and Joan Gusic; great-granddaughter Phoebe Simone Cornell; daughter Ellen Haber and granddaughters Alisa and Bella; nephews Fortune Dessin (Jody & Steven); Richard & Debbie Bloom (Sophia and Emily); Andrew & Cheryl Bloom (Jordan & Justin); Meryl & Paul Goldstein (Kyle and Jesse) and her sister Beatrice Fund. She pre-deceased by her beloved sisters Evelyn Bloom and Sylvia Milstein.
Miriam will be sorely missed and remembered for her grace, her endless love for her husband and family, a lifetime of hard work and work ethics, and for her steadfast honesty.
