Obituary for Sanford Sol Klein

Sanford (Sol) Klein (89) passed away peacefully on July 27th 2023, at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway, NY. Born August 11, 1933 to William and Rose Klein, Sol lived his young life in Brooklyn, NY with his adorable younger brother Donald. Unfortunately, their childhood was compromised when their dad passed away suddenly in 1948 during a business trip in Ohio. His family moved to Florida for a short time and then returned to NY where Rose eventually remarried William Oshinsky. Sol quickly grew to love and develop a close relationship with his new stepfather.

In the 1950s, Sol enlisted in the special services division of the Air Force, where he traveled internationally to several countries, including India, Morocco, Spain, France and England. After leaving the force, he accepted an offer to work at the Baldwin Piano Company, a dream job given that he was such a huge music lover. Sol played piano and was an avid harmonica player. In fact, he performed in various harmonica trios, featuring his uncles Murray, George and younger brother Don. Born with music in his veins, he continued performing in his later years at family reunions and events. In fact, weekends were jam packed with racing to Manhattan to see and hear orchestras, symphonies and shows. He was an encyclopedia of knowledge regarding all classical composers and their works.

In addition to his love of music, Sol was an outdoorsman. When time allowed, he’d sail on Pete Seeger’s sailboat, and was a member of his crew. He also loved motorcycles and skiing, even though he earned the phrase ‘break a leg’ when he broke his leg twice over the years.

Sol was always there when we needed him. A bachelor with no children, he regarded his nephews as his own. Sol attended all of their elementary, middle and high school concerts. He joined the boys on camp outings and was the first to hop aboard a kayak or canoe and brave the Delaware river rapids. He also moved his nephews into college. The Klein boys will miss Uncle Sol terribly.

Sol will be remembered for his enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was generous and brave, as well as a loyal family member and friend. He truly cherished his loved ones. He was a wonderful son who kept his Mom alive till she was past 100 yrs old, and was a loving brother, uncle, cousin and brother-in-law. Sol’s energy and passion for family, friends, music and the outdoors will be missed by all who knew him.

Sol was predeceased by William and Rose Klein, his step father, William Oshinsky and is survived by his brother, Donald, sister-in law, Anita, nephews, Bill(Lisa), Darryl(Leia), Erik(Adriane) and grand-nieces, Aliya, Whitney and Talia and loving cousins cousins cousins…….
