Obituary for Carol Amsterdam

Carol Amsterdam, beloved wife of Daniel and mother of Jonathan and Valerie, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2021. She was laid to rest two days later, on her 65th wedding anniversary. Carol was passionate about family first, but also the simplest pleasures of daily life; whether a meal or a news article, a tennis match or a streaming television series.

Carol was born June 26,1934 in Brooklyn, NY. She was determined to do what few women could do in the 1950’s: attend college. Carol graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in City Planning. While she never became a city planner, she did use her penchant for detail and love of travel to forge a path as a travel consultant. She spent three decades taking the dreams of her clients and mapping them out as if she were taking her own journey. She did the same for herself and accomplished her personal goal to see the world. She and Daniel took in sights on six continents over the course of their 70-plus years together. She retired in Buffalo, NY and spent the last decade thawing out in Fort Myers, Florida.

Growing up in the Freudian era, Carol was eager to understand and help people achieve their goals. Early in their relationship, she helped her husband Daniel overcome the guilt in the death of his brother. In the arts, drama and sports, she looked for the motivating forces that propelled individuals to reach their amazing milestones. No matter the event, all those within earshot could hear her hearty applause and shouts of “bravo.” The recipient of her adulation could be a Broadway performer, a tennis player, a politician, or her sweet and talented children and grandchildren.

Carol could brighten a room with conversation and laughter. She was filled with love and light. She chose to live fully even up to her final days when she told her family “I have lived a great life.” May we all be so fortunate.

Carol is survived by her husband Daniel, her children Jonathan (Amy Kass) and Valerie (Kevin Daniels), her grandchildren Chase and Madeline Daniels, Joshua and Ari Kass-Amsterdam, and her nephews, Jeffrey (Barbara) Drucker, Jordan and David Feig.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hope Hospice of Fort Myers, Florida or the Charles and Molly Amsterdam Fund of Temple Beth Tzedek, Buffalo, New York.
